Rounding out the season’s sales of 19th century European art is that which is upcoming at Bonham’s Auction House in New York.  Though Bonham’s is one of the larger firms in operation, its sales are frequently smaller in feel and feature lesser-known works than that of its sister houses of Christie’s and Sotheby’s, and this particular sale is no exception.  Nevertheless, Bonham’s can often be an opener, as what they bring to the market can be just as exquisite as most of what is on offer at other sales, but by artists whose position in art history is likely due a reassessment.  For collectors this can lead to attaining beautiful works at favorable prices, and for lovers of this genre of art, the fresh introduction to artists they might not otherwise have known.

Of particular notice in this sale are a fine costume piece by Auguste Toulmouche, a signature peasant girl painting by Daniel Ridgway Knight, a family portrait by Thomas Cooper Gotch, a fair portrait by Philip Alexius de László, and a lovely floral still-life by one of the heroes of Puerto Rican art, Francisco Manuel Oller y Cesteros .

Bonham’s sale of 19th Century European Paintings will take place at 1:00pm EST on November 20th.  Prior to bidding, all 107 lots will be on view at Bonham’s showroom at 580 Madison Avenue in Manhattan.  These previews are free and open to the public.  (Times and dates are listed below).  For more information on the sale, or to see the entire catalog of the sale online, please visit the Bonham’s website.
