A very important, first-of-its-kind auction is on view at Sotheby’s, New York, now through Monday, July 26th. Called “Contemporary Realism: Important 21st Century Works,” the sale features 28 artworks which featured in the Art Renewal Center’s recent 15th Annual International Salon. These particular lots were chosen from among the award-winners to represent some of the best the contemporary realism now being produced.

If this seems like an unusual offering from Sotheby’s, well, it is. In fact, it was only recently–when the auction house began including Golden Age illustration in their American art auctions–that Sotheby’s even considered regularly offering post WWI realist works. As it is, it would have been unlikely for such an auction to now exist, had it not been for the efforts of ARC’s founder, Fred Ross, who has long sought a platform from which to encourage his fellow collectors of 19th century art to consider buying contemporary examples of realism. Ross, no doubt, used his long-standing relationship with Sotheby’s to encourage the house to host this special sale and show to prospective buyers that this genre is as valid and valuable as any other they represent. For the sake of the genre, let’s hope they succeed.

Contemporary Realism: Important 21st Century Works” is an online only auction. Bidding has already begun, and will continue through Monday at 2:00pm EDT. Portions of each sale go directly to ARC, which is presenting the sale (Sotheby’s is only hosting it). Previews will be taking place all weekend, and likely, Monday morning as well. Sotheby’s hours are Monday through Saturday, 10am – 5pm, and Sunday, 1pm – 5pm. The salesroom is located at 1334 York Avenue, New York City (between 71st and 72nd street).
